Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.(1929-1968)

The first monument on the National Mall to honor an African-American, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial opened to the public on August 22, 2011. The “Stone of Hope” features a realistic carving of Dr. King emerging from the rock and commemorates his life-long quest to secure democracy, justice, hope and love for all people. The theme for the memorial was taken from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered in Washington, D.C. to approximately 250,000 people. Dr. King said, “With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.” He never ceased working for civil rights and was instrumental in many nonviolent demonstrations, including the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Well known for his eloquent and inspiring speeches, he received many honors over the course of his life. At the age of thirty-five, he became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
